The North Face® Lavaredo Ultra Trail 2017
The 11th edition of one of the world’s toughest races
On Friday 23rd June, The North Face® athletes, Seth Swanson (USA), Pau Capell (Spain) and Seb Chaigneau (France) set out on the 11th edition of The North Face® Lavaredo Ultra Trail – part of the Ultra-Trail World Tour. Alongside this, Fernanda Maciel (Brazil) took part in the Cortina Trail, the shorter distance race in the weekend.
Running for the first time in Cortina, Seth placed a stunning 2nd in a time of 12:34:41, whilst Seb came in 8th recording 13:29:45. After leading for much of the race in a mammoth effort, Pau had to leave the race before the final few stages due to stomach problems.
Renouned as one of the world’s most challenging ultras, the athletes tackled the race in just 12 hours. The journey will take them 120km race (with 5,850m of elevation) through the iconic Lavaredo region of the Sexten Dolomites; surrounded by the breath taking Cristallo, Tofane, Cinque Torri, and Tre Cime mountains.
Approximately 1,500 runners from around the world took part in the race, with a time limit of 30 hours to complete the challenge. Featuring some of the world’s toughest trails, the course included vertical faces and dramatic pale-coloured peaks, unique to the Dolomites.
A further 1,900 competitors also take part in two shorter races over the long weekend. 400 runners took on The Cortina Skyrace on Thursday 22nd. Running 20km (with 1000 meters of elevation) across steep, grassy and rocky slopes to reach Forcella Zumeles – the highest point on the route. On Saturday, the remaining athletes set off on The Cortina Trail. A 12 hour race, 48km trail – with Fernanda placing 7th in a time of 6:12:39.
