And you\u2019re taking heat from your boss for the weak turn-out. What went wrong?<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of reasons that reporters have for not showing up to press events.\u00a0\u00a0Often, they\u00a0politely claim\u00a0that \u201cbreaking news\u201d got in the way, and that may be true sometimes, but often it\u2019s not the case.\u00a0Here are some of the <strong>real <\/strong>reasons behind the no-shows:<\/p>\n<p>1) <strong>You didn\u2019t have any real news to offer<\/strong>. Background and perspective is great, food and drink are nice, but unless you have real news, I have other things to cover.<\/p>\n<p>2) <strong>You didn\u2019t tell me why your news was pertinent to me<\/strong> \u2026 and my viewers\/readers\/listeners. Do you even know what my beat is and do you read our publication or watch\/listen to our show?<\/p>\n<p>3) <strong>You didn\u2019t give me enough advance notice.<\/strong> I already have my week planned out and I can\u2019t change my schedule on a few days\u2019 notice.<\/p>\n<p>4) <strong>You scheduled it without regard to other competing events<\/strong>\u00a0\u2026 that are more important to me. I\u2019d love to attend your one-hour event in Detroit, but on that day I\u2019ll be out of town attending seven press conferences at the Los Angeles Auto Show.<\/p>\n<p>5) <strong>You scheduled it for a location\u00a0that is\u00a0incovenient\u00a0or unfeasible for me<\/strong>. I work in California, and while I think Toledo is a wonderful place, I have a hard time justifying a flight there (especially in January) for your one-hour presser and lunch.<\/p>\n<p>6) <strong>I never heard from you before <\/strong>\u2026 I\u2019ve never heard your CEO speak or I\u2019ve never heard of your company before, so why should I come running now?<\/p>\n<p>7) <strong>You\u2019re not offering anything at the event that I can\u2019t get from your news release<\/strong> \u2026 or via a phone interview, at least as far as I can tell.<\/p>\n<p>8)\u00a0<strong>I was somewhat interested when you invited me two weeks ago <\/strong>\u2026 but you failed to follow-up with more detail on why I should attend.<\/p>\n<p>9) <strong>We\u2019re short-staffed due to budget cuts<\/strong> \u2026 and I just don\u2019t have the time to spend a half-day getting to and back from your event.<\/p>\n<p>10) <strong>You scheduled it at, or in conjunction with, a\u00a0trade show or conference that I\u2019ll be attending <\/strong>\u2026 but unfortunately I already have a full schedule there.<\/p>\n<p>11) <strong>You scheduled it for too early in the morning or too late in the day.<\/strong> I do have a family and a personal life, you know, and have already missed dinner with my kids four times this week.<\/p>\n<p>12) <strong>You haven\u2019t been helpful to me in the past<\/strong> \u2026 with follow-up questions, images, B-roll video or other information that make it easy for me to develop my story.<\/p>\n<p>13) <strong>You didn\u2019t tie your news into the bigger picture<\/strong> \u2026 to connect it\u00a0to trends, industry issues, local economic impact, etc., and your revolutionary new widget isn\u2019t newsworthy by itself.<\/p>\n<p>14) <strong>You\u2019ve turned down multiple interview requests in the past<\/strong>\u00a0\u2026 or failed to return my phone calls or failed to be honest with me.<\/p>\n<p>With a press event, it\u2019s not as simple as \u201c<em>if you plan it, they will come<\/em>.\u201d Sometimes a press event is the right answer, sometimes it\u2019s not.
